"Hello, I'm Alex Mauskop. I'm a neurologist here in New York City and I'm the director of the New York City Headache Center. Some people call migraines that occur with the visual symptoms, optical migraine. The medical term for it is migraine with aura. Aura is a neurological phenomenon that originates in the brain, not in the eyes. Even though you see spots in front of your vision, in front of your eyes, in your visual field, usually on one side, you see zig zags, spots and lines, typically occurs half an hour before the headache. And thirty minutes it begins off in the periphery vision and moves to the mid line, sometimes on both sides and as soon as that clears, people develop a headache. So that's what some people call optical migraine but the official term is migraine with aura. One reason to know whether you have the aura or not, is that if a young woman has migraines with aura, she should not be taking oral contraceptives and not, at least not those with estrogen in them."
