"I'm Dr. David Thomas. I'm a practicing psychotherapist with the Whitford-Thomas Group in Tampa, Florida here to discuss what causes Bipolar Disease or Bipolar Disorder. Bipolar Disorder originally was called manic depression which was a little more descriptive regarding the mood disorder or mood disturbance so when we are talking about Bipolar Disorder we are talking about a manic state, an elevated state as well as a depression state. There is different subtypes of Bipolar Disorder from Bipolar 1, Bipolar 2, the Cyclothymia as well as Bipolar that is not easily detected. So what causes Bipolar Disorder? I think most experts in the field of psychiatry and medicine believe that Bipolar Disorder is not a learned disorder. It is really a disorder that has a strong genetic influence and often times when you see Bipolar Disorder you often times will take a history of the family and you know, all the way back to grandparents and all that, uncles, aunts and you'll often see that other folks in the family often also suffer from Bipolar Disorder. It doesn't mean they were necessarily diagnosed but in describing the behaviors often times patients or clients can easily identify certain characteristics or traits with family members. So what causes Bipolar Disorder again we believe it is a fairly genetic kind of influence is what creates Bipolar Disorder. I am hoping this information was helpful regarding what causes Bipolar Disorder. From Tampa, Florida, I'm Dr. David Thomas."
