"I'm Dr. David Thomas. I'm a practicing psychotherapist with the Whitford-Thomas Group in Tampa, Florida here to discuss how to recover from manic depression. Manic depression, it's important to recognize is a mood disorder. Manic depression we call today Bipolar Disorder but manic depression is an accurate description of the disorder. You have kind of varying states of energy and mood so in a manic state you have this kind of elevated mood, a lot of energy, don't need much sleep, elevated sense of self, kind of do it all, take on projects and don't often times finish them but you take on a lot so it is kind of the elevated state and in a depressed state, just the opposite, low energy, very easily fatigued, lack, kind of a lack of concentration, difficulty sleeping, often times you eat too much, drinking too much or not very much meaning that you tend to have some eating type of issues and some people just don't drink. So the depressed state is certainly just the opposite of the manic state. How do you recover from manic depression? As far as I know there is no real recovery. What ends up happening with manic depression, first medication is extremely important so you need to make an appointment with a psychiatrist to determine what type of medication is best for your type of Bipolar Disorder because there is various types of Bipolar Disorders and then certainly get yourself into therapy with a cognitive behavior therapist who really understands how thinking drives mood states and so you can change your thinking to really prevent often times the trigger of a manic depressive episode because of often times manic depression or Bipolar Disorder is triggered by one's stress response. So to be able to manage your stress and manage your emotions much more effectively would be a good preventive cure for manic depression.
