"I'm Dr. David Thomas. I'm a practicing psychotherapist with the Whitford-Thomas Group in Tampa, Florida here to discuss what are the side effects of DHEA? DHEA is a hormone that is secreted and produced by the adrenal glands. It peaks in our systems at about age 25 and then every year thereafter we get another decrease of about 2% of DHEA every year thereafter. Often times DHEA is used in the treatment of anxiety as a supplement. Because of the depletion of DHEA scientists and medical personnel have found is that as your DHEA begins to deplete you often times see symptoms that are often associated with depression or anxiety especially in the area of fatigue and loss of energy. So what are the side effects of DHEA? The side effects are really not much different than many of the psychotropic medications, the SSRI's, the Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor type medications. They usually come in three areas. There is probably tens and tens of symptoms that are listed but the primarily areas would be in the area of headaches, migraines, nauseas or digestive issues and sleep disorders. Those are the same type of symptoms we tend to see in most medications especially the ones of the antidepressants, not so much of the ones of the anxiety medications but certainly the SSRI's where primarily prescribed for depression but often have the ability to positively effect anxiety symptoms as well. So DHEA in the area of anxiety tends to produce the same side effects as all the other types of SSRI medications in the area of headaches, nauseas digestive areas as well as sleep disorders. Hopefully this information I have provided you today has been useful regarding the side effects of DHEA. From sunny Tampa, Florida I'm Dr. David Thomas."
