"I'm Dr. David Thomas. I'm a practicing psycho therapist with the Whitford Thomas group in Tampa, Florida to discuss DHEA and anxiety. DHEA is a hormone that's produced by the adrenal glands. It tends to peak at about age twenty-five and then slowly decrease every year thereafter. I've read that it will decrease in DHEA, about two percent every year after age twenty-five. Now if there's a disease process in your system or maybe you're highly stressed, maybe a major life event, be interpersonal achievement geared. Certainly going to stress the system much more and what we do find is the DHEA tends to pleat from the system much quicker. So in DHEA with anxiety and depression, that's really how the initial research began to evolve because they began to realize that some of the symptoms associated with the depletion of DHEA from the system, tend to mirror or mimic anxiety and depression systems such as fatigue and loss of energy. And so DHEA supplements often are used in the treatment of anxiety and depression. I wouldn't say it's the most common treatment of choice, but certainly, there's a number of studies indicating some of it's effectiveness. There's other types of medications to detreat depression and anxiety as well, but DHEA seems to be a viable alternative for those folks who are not comfortable with the SSR's, I's...the benzodiazepine is for treating various forms of anxiety, and of course SSR is for depression as well as generalized anxiety. Well, I hope this information's been helpful regarding DHEA and anxiety and depression. Dr. David Thomas from Tampa, Florida."
