"My name is Tanya Batts, and I'm with Physique Designs. Today I want to talk to you about how to prevent a hernia. A hernia is an abdominal tear, or weakening in the inner lining of the abdominals. The abdominal lining is going to hold all of the internal organs in place. So, if you see a little lump coming out of your side, you absolutely need to go to your doctor right about, because a hernia is life threatening. I'm going to tell you how to prevent it. If you must lift heavy objects, which I don't want you to lift heavy objects, but if you must, please use proper body mechanics. So, let's pretend this is a bolder. Instead of bending this way, which puts unnecessary stress on the abdominal muscles, I want you to bend the legs and always lift heavy objects with your legs. Another thing, if you have to lift heavy objects, use a back brace because lifting heavy objects can cause a hernia. The next two things I want to talk about, constipation, I know it's terrible. But, if you have constipation, please see your doctor because strain during a bowel movement can cause a hernia, as well as coughing. If you've got a persistent cough, see a doctor because coughing can cause that hernia. So, those are some ways to prevent your from getting a hernia."
