"Hi, I'm Dr. David Hill and today we're talking about ear protection for children. Child is a very sensitive time for protecting hearing. Children's ears are significantly more sensitive than adults ears and they can hear sounds that are higher and quieter than grown ups can. In order to preserve hearing for as long as possible, you want to protect your children ears from loud noises especially loud noises that are prolonged in terms of exposure. You don't want them listening to music with headphones; unless you have sort of ascertain what volume level they're listening at and make sure that it's sort of, the same as the surrounding conversation and ambient sound. In fact, if you can discourage your children from using headphones in general, that's really your best option. If you're going to be in a noisy environment like an air show or riding a motorcycle; which by the way we don't really recommend for kids anyway but we know that it happens; make sure that children have appropriate safety gear. Go ahead and get them ear plugs or some sort of headphones that they can wear to protect their hearing. If you didn't expect to be in that situation and it's a surprise, go ahead, cover their ears with your hand. They have more to lose than you do in a situation like that. But most of all, you'd probably be smart just to avoid those situations altogether. I wouldn't be taking your child to a rock and roll concert for example or to shooting range without appropriate ear protection and of course, all the other safety precautions. You don't want to take them in an environment like that. So remember, your child is hearing more than you are; higher pitch sounds than you are and as more sensitive than you are to hearing loss under situations where there's a lot of excessive noise. Try to avoid the situations; don't let them wear headphones and if you know that you're going to be in that situation, cover up their ears; protect their hearing. Talking about protecting children's hearing, I'm Dr. David Hill."
