Hi this is Yolanda Vanveen and in this segment we're going to talk about how does the strong scent of a flower benefit a plant? And why do plants have a fragrance? So basically plants and flowers have a fragrance to attract pollinators. Whether it's hummingbirds or bumblebees or butterflies, they want to attract the pollinators so that they can have different DNA, their genetics can be changed. And so they depend on the pollinators. So it's not that different from humans. When a woman is ovulating she puts off more pheromones so she can attract men. Well flowers put off a fragrance so they can attract pollinators because they're bisexual, they have both sexes in one, they're asexual so they have both the male and female parts in a plant. So they don't really depend on other plants to touch them physically, they depend on the pollinators to go to the other plants and then to pollinate them. So by having a wonderful fragrance like this beautiful hiaasen, they can attract all the pollinators whether it be the bees, the hummingbirds or the butterflies.
