"Hi I'm Stan DeFreitas, Mr Green Thumb. So you want to trim back roses or keep them in shape. Well in general we do two things when we trim a plant. We trim off any of the diseased part of the plant any die back which roses get into or if we want to keep the overall shape of the plant to a certain form or shape. Now in this case here we've got an old rose plant that may be we need to trim it back just a bit. We want to take off the old flower. So when you do that, you can also make sure that you trim it and that it's going to be a good healthy looking stem. Trim back the plant, take the stem and go ahead and trim the overall plant to whatever shape or size that you're looking for. If you do that, you can keep this plant to a good rounded shape. If the plant starts to send off long tall stems and it will, you need to trim those back near the base of the plant for best effect. Miniature roses you're only going to trim on occasion, just the little small stems. Some of the hybrid T's, you're going to trim as those stems go too far from the mother plant.
