"My name is Miranda Chook, a CPA. Enrolled agents are tested and certificated by the US Department of Treasury to represent tax payers in events such as examinations, collections, and appeals so the only time you would be considering working with an enrolled agent is in terms of some tax assistance. I mention this because if for example you are trying to do a comparison between enrolled agents and CPA's you need to understand that because sometimes CPA's may be experts in externals audits and if you needed your financial statements audited then you'd go to a CPA and not an enrolled agent. Now if you need assistance with taxes again the enrolled agent is certainly someone that you would consider but make sure that your CPA is a tax accountant and now that you have sort of whittled down your list make sure that each one of them has experienced in the area of taxes that is relevant to you. If you are in an appeals process find out if they had experience in appeals and how successful they have been."
