"Chinese herbs can be a very effective alternative for Western antibiotics. As with all herbal remedies, it's important to consult with you Acupuncture Physician or Herbalogist to get proper diagnosis, treatment and herbal prescription. Something that's really exciting about herbal antibiotics is that they're very cold in nature and so what they do is they actually freeze the bacteria and flush it out of the body. So that's kind of the principle of how they work; only they're much more gentler than Western antibiotics and repeated use of Western antibiotics causes many side effects as most of you know. So the Chinese herbs are a good alternative. This is an exciting formula; this is called Yin Xiao and if you get that really feeling of a sore scratchy and like that achy body feeling like, "Oh my God, I'm going to be sick for the next two weeks." If you take Yin Xiao within the first twenty four hours, many times it can stop the infection before it even begins. I have personally experience this and I've had many of my patients experience that. So, very good formula to have for that immediate use. Also, again Mai Ling; depending on what your needs are. It might begin, Mai Ling might be more effective for that first twenty four hours to ward it off at the past, so to speak. So if it has actually gone into an infection, then you would want to choose one of these formulas, Cactus or Huang Lian and these are the very, very cold formulas that you would take for, you know, you could take after it's already taken hold; maybe into the first or second week. Then I do like to have this herbal formula on hand; this formula is called Huang Lian Jei Du Tang; cactus decoction to relieve toxicity. This formula is for high fever, dry mouth, sore throat, insomnia or irritability. So, it's appropriate for such things as strep throat, tonsillitis, appendicitis, urinary tract infection, pneumonia, sinus infection and we call this herb the four yellows. So as you can see, all of these herbs in this formula have kind of a yellow color to them. You can't take this formula very long. This is just to kill that bacteria; then you move on. But I like to have it on hand because when you have a raging infection, you want to take it immediately. So the first herbalist formula is called Huang Lian, rhizoma coptidis and this drains that fire toxin out of the body. It's kind of a nice yellow color. The next one is called Huang Xin; this is rooted scutellaria, it's a skullcap root and it also drains the fire; has a yellow color. The third herbal formula is called Huang Bai, Cortex Phellodendri. This is the bark of a cork tree. Can you see that? It's bark and this drains the damp heat. And the fourth and last herbalist formula is called Zhi zi and this is the Gardenia Jasmine fruit. You can see that little fruit from the Jasmine tree and this also drains damp heat. So, four very powerful clear heat; very very cold herbs, all yellow in color. So four herbs, very good for using as an antibiotic."
