"I think you need to look at your drive habits and your goal for the vehicle. If you are buying a later model car that you plan on keeping a really long time well then it is important to get a long term warranty, even purchase the dealer's extended warranty. It is great coverage. It allows you to extend the original manufacturer's coverage and I think that is very very important because the cost with repair on a car now with how technical they are can be expensive and you can offset some of that cost by purchasing an extended warranty. If your objective is to keep or buy a used car and keep it a shorter amount of time well then you can probably deal with a little bit less coverage and maybe stick with a power train type coverage. We here at Capital Ford Lincoln Mercury we provide two basic warranties. That is the manufacturer's warranty and then also we have a BG a product protection plan which is the vehicle is maintained in our service department in a certain way you can have coverage on them for the lifetime of the vehicle just based on a product assistance on the different components and we do that in an effort to provide the customer with protection on their used vehicles so they can have a peace of mind but you do have to maintain the vehicle in order to keep that protection assistance. If you know that you are going to drive a lot of miles in not a lot of time they can tailor make these warranties now. If you know you are going to have a lot of miles but not much time you can extend the miles and not the time. If you know that you don't drive that much perhaps you are retired or what have you you can not get as many miles and just add more time to your manufacturer's warranty and also an important thing to note that purchase of the warranty will be offered at the time of sale but just say it is not quite in your budget it is never cheaper than to do it then but as you move forward you can still purchase an extended warranty as long as your car is still under the original manufacturer's warranty so if it is not in your budget at that time which a lot of people find it easier to go ahead and roll it into their payment, they find it a more economical way then coming on later down the road and having to pay for the whole warranty, you know in cash. But that is also an option so just know how you drive and look at your past patterns and say hey am I going to drive more miles we'll do it this way if I am going to drive more time and less miles do it this way it is the cheapest way and you can ride with a piece of mind that hey I'm not going to get hit with a huge service bill with this warranty."
