"Hi I'm Dan Stringfield, I'm with Twiggs Bakery here in San Diego, California. We're going to do a brief little segment on groom's cakes. Now the first question most people ask is what is a groom's cake? Groom's cake really sort of a southern tradition initially. Men let's face it, most weddings, 90% are, it's all about the bride. Now the groom happens to be another guest at the bride's big day so the groom's cake is sort of a way of sort of throwing a bone to the groom saying here, you spent 30,000 bucks on the wedding event all for the bride and here is 200 bucks we spent just for you. But it's traditionally in the south a wedding cake was just like a white cake with white icing, very plain cake and the groom's cake was a chocolate cake so that way the groom could have a chocolate cake, something rather than just a plain Jane cake. These days however very few wedding cakes are just white cake with white icing and then people do carrot cakes, walnut cakes, a whole range of things. So the groom's cake is sort of stopped being sort of an alternate flavor and it's really become something to more reflect the groom himself. It's sort of the one little piece of the wedding that's just for the groom. So generally they can either reflect the groom's alma mater, a lot of guys are big sports fans so we'll do cakes that are logos of their favorite sports team like Boston Red Sox is really popular, San Diego Padres here in San Diego, the Chargers are really popular or if he just has some hobby that he likes. We've done Frisbee cakes for some guy who's really into Frisbee. So that's really what groom's cakes are all about. It's sort of tough to do a demonstration of one because they're unique for each groom and depending upon how much money you want to spend, you can get a simple cake with just a logo on top of it or you can get a sculpted cake that really reflects the groom more and draws more attention to him. But that's what groom's cakes are and it's a nice way of making the guy feel special."
