"Hello, I'm Dr. David Cathcart. I'm a family practice physician from Heartland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph and we are going to talk about chemotherapy drugs and their side effects today. The side effects of chemotherapy drugs for breast cancer are much like the side effects of chemotherapy drugs for many other types of cancers. There are some specific drugs that are used for breast cancer that have fairly well-known side effects. For example, some of them can cause osteoporosis, primarily because they suppress the ovaries' ability in women to produce estrogen which is important for bone growth. There's another one that is fairly commonly used in women that's called Taxol. Taxol actually can damage the nerves in your hands and your feet causing a burning sensation or numbness and tingling as it's often described or pins and needles sensation. Another medication that's sometimes used is one called Taxotere that can actually irritate the tear ducts in people that are getting treatment. So it can cause excessive tearing. Another medication that is sometimes used is one called Adriamycin which can have some side effects to the heart. And, another one Cytoxan or Cyclophosphamide can affect the white blood cells in such a way as to cause a leukemia. So, to try and list all of the side effects for all the potential medications that can be used for breast cancer are difficult, but in general, they can cause nausea, hair loss, some of the exact same types of side effects that other chemotherapy drugs do. This is Dr. Cathcart talking about the side effects of breast cancer chemotherapy."
