"Hello I'm Dr. David Cathcart, I'm a family practice physician from Heartland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph, and we're going to talk about chemotherapy drugs and their side effects today. Alimta chemotherapy, is a trade name for a drug called Pemetrexed, which is actually used for mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is a type of lung cancer that people get that have been exposed to asbestos, asbestos in the past. It usually takes quite a few years from the time you are exposed to asbestos to the time that you may come down with lung cancer. But at any rate the Alimta chemotherapy is one that is commonly used for mesothelioma. The side effects are, in about, well the good news is first of all that not everyone gets the side effects. And certainly no everyone gets all the side effects, but some side effects are common. And in about thirty percent of the people that are treated with Alimta chemotherapy, the most common side effects are things like a low or depressed white blood cell count, which helps fight off infection, as well as anemia, which shows a low red cell blood count. So that in turn will tend to make somebody very fatigued. They can also get constipation, and shortness of breath, and chest pain. But those are some of the common, more common side effects with Alimta chemotherapy. Again effecting about thirty percent of the people.
