"Hey, my name is Dr. Bill Huhgson, a Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of California San Diego and I am the director of the UCSD Center for Occupational and Environmental Medicine. A mesothelioma is a cancer; it arises in cells called mesothelial cells. Mesothelial cells line the chest cavity and they also line the abdomen. The lining in the chest is called the pleura. So if you have a mesothelioma there, it's called a pleural mesothelioma. Mesothel, mesothelial cells in the abdomen form a layer called the peritoneum. So if you get a mesothelioma there; it's called the peritoneal mesothelioma. On rare occasions you can get mesotheliomas in other sites including the heart and also in the scrotum; but those are exceptionally rare."
