"My name is Dr. Bill Hughson a clinical professor of medicine at The University of California San Diego and I am the director of the UCSD Center for Occupational and Environmental Medicine. The National Cancer Institute estimates that there are about 2,000 cases of Mesothelioma each year in the United States. There are other numbers that you can read anywhere up to about 3,000 cases but by any standard Mesothelioma is relatively rare. For example there are about 175,000 lung cancer cases in the United States every year. Mesotheliomas of course occur in other countries for example in Australia and in Europe. They have fewer as a total number of cases because of their populations but for example in Australia they have used a type of asbestos called blue asbestos which is very potent and the rate of Mesothelioma per million population is much higher than it is in the United States. We are very lucky in the United States that we have used a type of asbestos called white asbestos. White asbestos can cause Mesothelioma if it is contaminated with tremolite which is a different type of fiber but even contaminated chrysotile is much less potent than the other commercial types, probably at least 100 times less potent, some would say even 800 times less potent so we are quite lucky in the United States considering how much asbestos was used to have such a low rate of Mesothelioma."
