My name is Laura Turner, and today I'm going to talk to you about what the difference is between a M.D. and a Ph.D. There is really only one difference, and the answer is, that M.D. is a doctor of medicine. So, a doctor, a surgeon, or a general practitioner, or an OBGYN, who is going to practice medicine on you. A Ph.D. is not the same thing. A Ph.D. is technically called a doctor of philosophy. And you can get a Ph.D. in just about anything that's academically offered. You can get a Ph.D. in philosophy, you can get a Ph.D. in English, you can get a Ph.D. in theater, you can get a Ph.D. in, oh, I'm drawing a blank, Spanish, and things like this. You can get a Ph.D. in just about anything. So, a Ph.D. just means that it's an advanced degree. And an M.D., means this person has gone to school in order to learn everything there is to know about practicing medicine, so that they can give you the best care possible. A Ph.D., you're usually going to find in the classroom, teaching you. An M.D., you're usually going to find in an operating room, using very sharp things on you. So, in either case, you're going to want these people to have these degrees, in order to show that they are qualified to do what they are going to do. And that's the difference between an M.D. and a Ph.D."
