What Is Verisign?

"Hi my name is Dave Andrews. Today I'm going to talk to you about Verisign. Verisign is a company on the Internet that basically deals in what are called SSL certificates. Now let's say you run a website and you want to tell your users that your website is secure and the information they are transferring is encrypted. What you'll need is an SSL certificate in order to do this and I would go through Verisign to purchase that certificate. Let's go to our computer and I'll show you a couple things. This is Verisign's website, it's basically verisign.com and from here you can buy SSL certificates and also you can sign SSL certificates. Now what that will do is that will show on your user's computer that the certificate that they're accessing is signed and that's just another level of security that they will feel that this has been signed by an external company and the data that I am transferring is secure. You can actually advertise this fact that you have been Verisign secured on your website just by adding Verisign's little check box here. Now what will happen if a user accesses a site that is not secured or not signed rather, is they'll get a pop up on their screen. And this basically says there's a security alert and I'm sure you've seen one of these before that you're accessing an unsigned certificate and they'll have to click yes to this in order to login to what they're trying to access. Now that's something that you want to avoid then you want to get your certificate signed by Verisign and that way this won't turn away any potential users to your website. So as a user, if you're browsing a site and you see this Verisign secured check box here, you can feel pretty safe that that site is using a secure certificate from Verisign which is basically the most secure that you can get on the Internet currently.
