"Hi, my name's John Bosworth, I'm a licensed Mental Health counselor in St. Pete, Florida. I'd like to talk about Schizophrenia and is it inherited. It's long been thought that Schizophrenia runs in families, most people that are diagnosed, and truly diagnosed with Schizophrenia have some family member who either had sever mental illness that wasn't truly diagnosed, or was truly diagnosed as Schizophrenic. We know that there's a certain genetic link, monozygotic or identical twins, if one twin has it, the chances of the other on having it are probably the highest of forty to fifty percent, which is a pretty good indication that there's a genetic component to it. About ten percent of people with, with a mother or a father with Schizophrenia tend to develop the disorder also. And I think in the general population, it's about a one percent chance of developing any type of psychotic disorder, or Schizophrenia. But we also want to look at, in the causes of Schizophrenia are not just a genetic link, but what is that genetic link. And it looks like we've, there's two neurotransmitters that might be responsible for Schizophrenia and the brain's regulation of those neurotransmitters, and those are dopamine and glutamate. And some research right now that's being conducted in the last few years is very promising on, on kind of isolating if those neurotransmitters actually do play a vital role in who will develop Schizophrenia, or not. My name's John Bosworth, and I'm talking about, you know, how Schizophrenia, or is Schizophrenia inherited."
