Many years ago there were no laws about holding monkeys as pets. Monkeys were imported from all over the world and individuals could purchase them as pets. This is no longer the case. Not only can monkeys not be imported from overseas, there are also many states and local authorities that do have regulations which either limit or in some cases ban private ownership of primates.
