"It has been my experience through my past education in dance that becoming a male dancer is quite different from that of the path of a female. First of all, it is important to note that you can become a great male dancer whether you have female or male teachers, but at some point along the way it is important to study under a male dancer. The reason being, men's bodies are very differently built from a female. Men have better balance which means higher jumping capacity in the ballet dance form, and some of this can only be taught really well by another male dancer themselves. Along the way, male dancers will have to have continued education through their dance. Oftentimes, studios and universities will offer dance classes specifically for men taught by men. Depends on what dance form you're looking into for being a male. I have found several several male dancers throughout my experiences that didn't start dancing until much later in life. Maybe they were athletes when they were a little bit younger and then got drawn to the art form of dance. Either way, you can still become a great male dancer even if you haven't had as much training at as young of an age. One thing that I find is important to note is male dancers are always more hireable than females being that there typically are fewer of them than the girls along the circuit. So, if you decide to take classes as a male dancer you may find that you have a lot more job opportunities than the girls do."
