Hi my name is Charlotte Skiles. I am a clinical herbalist and nutrition consultant with Eat in Peace Wellness Consulting located in Austin, Texas. And today I'm going to be talking to you about liver and gall bladder cleanses. And the thing that comes to mind most for me with this particular topic are what herbal remedies are good for the liver and the gall bladder? And so I'd like to talk you through a couple of those and you can purchase these for yourself to see what shows up and shifts in your body. So that said, I'd like to say that herbs are for people and not diseases. So visiting with an herbalist while it may be an unfamiliar thing to you, can be very beneficial because we've been trained in a way to match plants to people as opposed to going to the store and you were just alone or with someone else matching a plant to your particular disease process. So with that in mind, I'm going to speak very generally and give some liver herbs and gall bladder herbs that I feel will be supportive to just anybody and everyone or at least a fun experiment to see what shows up in terms of your connection with that particular plant. So the first one that I'm thinking of is milk thistle. So that's silybum marianum is the scientific name for this particular plant. And it is food for the liver. It's not necessarily an herb for detoxification, but it's an herb that helps the liver be healthy so in that regard, it is perfect for supporting the liver and the gall bladder and helping the body detoxify substances. So it's a seed and you can buy it as a seed and add it to your diet or you can purchase it over the counter with a concentrated product called silymarin which is one constituent out of the milk thistle seed that aids in helping liver function. So with this you see actual regeneration of the liver cells. It's fantastic to take at night before bed as that is the time that the liver is the most active in it's repair and preparing you for the next day. So milk thistle would be a lovely herb to consider when thinking about liver and gall bladder cleanses. My next favorite plant that comes to mind is one called schisandra chinensis, schisandra berries. This is also called wu wei zi in Chinese medicine and this is particular berry that contains all five tastes so it's sweet, it's sour, it's pungent, it's salty and it's bitter. Now something that we see in herbal medicine is the more complex the taste, the more complex the medicine. So in addition to benefiting the liver and the gall bladder, in it's sour tastes and bitter taste, the schisandra also has a beautiful effect on the nervous system and the ability for the body to adapt to daily stresses. It has a mind clearing property to it so it's a beautiful berry for mental clarity and most importantly however in terms of what our topic is here today, it supports both the liver and the gall bladder in terms of keeping the bile moving. These particular organ systems we're discussing loves sour tastes. So I really would recommend experimenting with schisandra berries. You can order these from a company called Pacific Botanicals and you can eat these little berries, maybe up to 20 a day would be a gram of this berry, so 10 in the morning and 10 at night or you can keep a little bowl on your desk and much on them when you feel like you need a little bit of energy boost or want to focus some love on your liver and gall bladder.
