For indexing purposes, British industry uses SIC codes, which is Standard Industrial Classification codes as a form of referencing. SIC codes are very important for all lines of businesses as a form of research tool. Market researchers and advertisers use the SIC codes to actually define their business segments and to find out in more detail the classification of the business and the various, relevant pieces of information required when targeting on them. Economists use these codes when they're analyzing market trends. Job hunters use these codes when they're trying to define businesses within sectors. So these codes are a highly used, and a very important attempt to cross reference."
