"Okay. How does a TV tuner work with DIRECTV? The DIRECTV receiver, which I have here, outputs on a coaxial cable, which then goes into the television tuner. The TV tuner takes the signal from here, which is broadcast out of this jack on channel three or channel four. So this TV tuner must be set on channel three or channel four, depending upon where the switch is set on the back of the receiver. There's only two options. And then if you have it on the correct channel on your TV tuner, you'll be picking up the satellite signal from your satellite receiver. And most TVs have a digital or a TV tuner unless they are a monitor, which means they'll just have a line input without a TV tuner. If you have a monitor and not a television in...which means it doesn't have a tuner built in, you'd have to use the line output jacks on the DIRECTV satellite receiver to generate a picture on the TV."
