Hi my name is Charlotte Skiles. I am a nutrition consultant and clinical herbalist with Eat in Peace Wellness Consulting located in Austin, Texas. And today I'm going to be talking to you about an herb called ampalya that's used as an herbal remedy for diabetes. So the name of this, or the easier way to say it is bitter melon. This is an herb that has a lot of traditional use for diabetes along with a host of other conditions. And it's particular action is built into it's name. So bitter melon, it is an extremely bitter herb and is designed to be, it's a food and you incorporate it into a meal in maybe a fermented form as a digestive aid because that bitter taste stimulates all of the digestive function in the body. So the ending of each taste bud is an actual nerve and when the bitter taste or any taste for that matter, but right now we're talking about the bitter taste, stimulates that particular taste bud, it sends a message to the vagus nerve which then communicates to the entire digestive tract and it up regulates digestive function. Now this can be of great use to a diabetic because the diabetic of course is concerned with insulin secretion. Now this depends on what type of diabetes we're talking about, with type one diabetes the person isn't making insulin and with type two diabetes, that has more to do with the fact that the cells have lost means of communicating, the insulin can't communicate with the cells so there's too much insulin in the system. But I would suspect then in either case using an herb such as bitter melon can help aid digestive function which then is going to help the pancreas. Because if we can help the body communicate better, then we've increased health and vitality and that is the goal. So that's what I have to say about bitter melon as a remedy for diabetes.
