About the Medication Exelon

"This is Lois Adams, President and CEO of Freedom Pharmacy and Wellness Centers in Orlando, Florida. I'm also a consultant pharmacist. We are going to talk about Exelon today. Exelon is a cholinesterase inhibitor, and that's a class of drugs that treats dementia. It improves mental functioning. It's used to treat dementia; a brain disorder that affects the ability to think clearly, and remember, and communicate or perform daily tasks, and it causes mood swings and personality changes. Types of dementia include Alzheimer's Disease, dementia from Parkinson's Disease, or diabetes. There are many things that cause dementia. It should be taken twice a day exactly as directed. You're continuing your normal diet. It may improve the ability to think or slow the loss of abilities, but it cannot cure dementia, and many thing people think that this drug is going to cure. What it does is it causes them to have, it slows down the memory loss, and the drug works very well. It comes in tablets, a skin patch, and liquid formulations. You select a different part of the body or body site each day with the patch. People use the patch because there are side effects from the the tablets. The side effects include gastro-intestinal problems, drowsy or drugged feeling, and it has many, many drug drug interactions. And this is a little bit about the drug Exelon."
