The prescription drugs that are commonly abused are those which alter the mood or elevate the mood or they are used to kill pain. They all require a doctor's signature on the prescription and they are controlled substances. Examples of a few are the narcotic pain killers Oxycontin which you all have heard about, it's in the news all the time as being so very addicting. The sedatives and tranquilizers such as Xanax, stimulants such as Ritalin, mood elevators such as Zoloft which is wildly used, benzodiazepine such as Valium. There are depressants like phenobarbital, anabolic steroids, stimulants such as dextroamphetamine or the amphetamines and of course there's alcohol, tobacco and over the counter drugs such as pseudoephedrine. Pseudoephedrine is rather unusual because this is something that patients or people want to get their hands on, they make methamphetamine out of pseudoephedrine. So there have been extra and improved laws regarding the use of pseudoephedrine and the ability to obtain it through your pharmacy. This has been our segment on what prescription drugs are commonly abused.
