"Your wife is pregnant and the two of you want to know can she take time off from her job, and if she does, is she going to get paid for it? Is she going to have a job when she comes back or exactly what's going on? You've heard something about a federal law that protects her job, but you're just not sure what's involved. Hello, I'm Robert Todd, and I'm here to answer the question: What is the Family Medical Leave Act, oftentimes abbreviated FMLA? Well, first of all, this is a federal law that went into effect in 1993 during the Clinton administration, and it is a very comprehensive law. And while it applies to most governmental agencies with respect to private enterprises, there is a requisite number of employees -- approximately 50 -- and there are other requirements. It's not automatic that everyone that employs anyone in the United States is subject to this Act. It does...if you are covered by the Act, it does allow you to take up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave, and does guarantee your job. But there are certain requirements. If you have specific questions, you may want to go on the United States Department of Labor website, pull up the FMLA, and take a look at it. There's a section under the Act entitled "Frequently Asked Questions" that will probably answer most of your questions. I'm Robert Todd, and thank you for watching."
