Hi, my name's Kayti Brosnan. I'm a nurse here in Austin, Texas, and I'm going to tell you the reasons to become a nurse. There's a lot of reasons. In my opinion, some of the best reasons are that nurses are in demand. It's predicted that by 2020, we're going to have a shortage of 800,000 nurses. So with the economy and with job security, nursing is a really good area to move into. They also have really good flexible schedules, so if you're a parent or you don't like to work a lot or you want to get it all in at the beginning of the week, you have options to work four-, eight-, twelve-hour shifts. And a full-time schedule is 36 hours, which would be three 12-hour shifts. You can work during the week, you can work weekends, you can work days, evenings, or nights. So there's a lot of flexibility there. There's also the ability to advance in nursing, so you could start out and then move into different specialties or advance your career with education and become a nurse practitioner or a certified nurse anesthetist or a flight nurse. There's a whole lot of things that you could do once you get into the field and you figure out what you like and what works for you. Another great thing is that people are sick everywhere, so they need nurses everywhere. So whether your husband's job moves or you just kind of want to pick up and go, you can always find a comparable nursing job in a different city or state or even internationally. And there's also the ability to travel nurse. But I think the most important is not the job security or the salary or the flexible schedules. I think it's caring for people, and that you have the ability within this job to care for people and help them leave healthy and happy lives. And that's the reason...those are some of the reasons why becoming a nurse is so great.
