Why Is There a Shortage of RNs?

"Hi, my name is Kayti Brosnan. I'm a Registered Nurse here in Austin, Texas. And today I'm tell you some of the reasons why there's a shortage of RNs. It's predicted that by 2020 or 2025, we'll have between five hundred and eight hundred thousand less nurses. Than we have today. One of the biggest reasons for this is the fact that we're living longer. That we've had advances in technology, advances in medicine. And that people are, they're just living longer. And they're able to live higher and better quality lives because of medicine. Another reason is elective surgeries. So there's more options out there. You can have knee surgeries, elbow surgeries, plastic surgeries. People are getting Bypasses to lose weight. So there's withing the advances in technology. There's also Elective technology that's creating more job need. It's also hard to retain nurses in this field. Sometimes due to high stress or poor work environments. Others is the fact that females are the primary employees in a nursing setting. And so you can make more money or advance in other careers. And that's more available to females today. Then it was thirty or forty years ago. And another really big reason is Baby Boomers. That there's so many of them. And they're all getting older at the same time. With a lot of the same ailments. And so they're kind of flooding our hospitals. And that's just going to continue to increase in the next fifteen, twenty years. So those are just some of the reasons. Why we have a shortage of RNs."
