"There are currently two types of pills available in the United States. These are combination pills which are a combination of two female hormones estrogen and progestin which is a synthetic progesterone. These are found naturally in the body and help regulate the female cycle. The other type of pill is a progestin or progesterone pill only and their specific uses for these nonestrogen containing pills especially women who have risk factors with estrogen such as heart attacks, strokes, history of blood clots, severe headaches, high blood pressure, and other possibly hormone related medical disorders you would avoid the combination pills which have estrogen in them and go just with the progestin containing pills of which there are only a hand full of pills that are just progestin. The emergency contraception pill or the morning after pill is actually a progestin containing pill only and therefore if taken within the first five days after a sexual accident or a condom failure it prevents pregnancy and does not cause any estrogen related problems."
