"Hello, I am Dr. David Burns, I'm a professor emeritus at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine. Stomach cancer is an important cause of cancer, particularly in Asian countries. It was felt that it was predominantly caused by the ingestion of smoked and preserved through smoking meats and fish. And therefore stomach cancer rates have been declining. However it's now clear that ingestion of cigarette smoke increases the risk of stomach cancer. Just as eating lots of smoked products which contain nitrosamines and other carcinogens increase the risk of cancer of the stomach. So ingesting the cancer causing substances present in cigarette smoke also increase the risk of stomach cancer. Stomach cancer is a very difficult cancer because it's often not found until relatively late in it's course and requires extensive surgery and often the outcome is not very good, that is a large fraction of people who develops stomach cancer go on to die of it."
