Hi this is Jane Stammer from the Colorado School of Mines and I'm here to answer questions on the physical characteristics of rocks. Rocks have many characteristics that separate themselves. One being color, another being the size and shape of the minerals within them. Certain rocks are very coarse grain minerals, others have very fine grain minerals. Color depends on the type of minerals, they can leave streaks if the minerals, depending on the minerals in them. They can be very hard or very soft, they can be very heavy or very light. Rocks with previous metals in them tend to be heavier than ones that don't have precious metals in them. They can react with different chemicals so by pouring different chemicals on certain rocks they can effervesce. And those are just some of the physical characteristics of rocks.
