"What are some interesting facts about diabetes? Hi, I'm Amy Bull, Professor and family Nurse Practitioner at Vanderbilt University School of Nursing. About 1/3 of the individuals born in the year 2000 will develop diabetes. About 1/2 of the individuals born in that same year will develop pre-diabetes. Pre-diabetes is when you are at risk for diabetes, but don't have symptoms. You do have elevated blood sugars, or blood sugars that are above the normal. But you do not have symptoms and you do not meet criteria for diabetes at that time. Usually within about ten years, you will develop diabetes. What are some other interesting facts about diabetes? In the United States, among those diagnosed with diabetes, every hour two individuals will go blind. Another five will start dialysis. Six will suffer stroke. Nine will undergo amputation. Ten will have a heart attack. Another twenty-six will die. Every hour, fifteen million dollars is spent on health care, for the diabetic in the United States."
