How do you prevent type 2 diabetes? Hi I'm Amy Bull, Professor and Family Nurse Practitioner at Vanderbilt University School of Nursing. First of all let's talk about type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is when the body is unable to utilize sugar. Sugar that is taken in through the diet, or sugar that the body actually makes. Type 2 diabetes can be prevented through diet and exercise. By controlling the amount of sugar that one takes in or by improving how the body uses sugar through regular exercise. Type 2 diabetes can be prevented through diet and exercise, by controlling the amount of sugar that one takes in or by improving how the body uses sugar through regular exercise. Regular exercise is recommended 30 minutes a day every day of the week but the 30 minutes doesn't have to occur at one time as long as you participate in 10 minute increments of exercise three times a day you'll meet your 30 minute daily goals. The exercise should be of at least moderate intensity which is usually a brisk walk. Running or bike riding up and down hills would be more of a high intensity but should also be at 30 minutes a day. Diet changes that need to be made to prevent diabetes include eating a low calorie, low fat diet and avoiding excess sugar, limiting your alcohol and choosing healthy carbohydrates. These are all ways to prevent type 2 diabetes.
