You may be wondering how to deal with diabetes. Hi I'm Amy Bull, Professor and Family Nurse Practitioner at Vanderbilt University School of Nursing. Diabetes can be dealt with but there are some steps that you definitely need to follow. First of all you have to have a healthy eating habit. You have to have a healthy lifestyle in general. Daily exercise is important, not smoking is important. There are so many things that an individual needs to do to be healthy to deal with their diabetes. How you specifically deal with it depends on the type of diabetes that you have. For instance the patient with Type I diabetes that patient has no available insulin in their body so not only do they have to follow a healthy diet and have regular exercise but they also have to have daily insulin shots that also requires checking your blood sugar on a daily basis at least once and possibly several times during the day. For the patient with type 2 diabetes, the cornerstone of managing that condition is really diet and exercise. If you follow a healthy diet and if you get regular moderate exercise such as brisk walking you can control your diabetes and possibly even reverse and prevent complications. Don't start smoking. If you are a smoker stop smoking. Now when we think about smoking we may not relate it to diabetes but we all know that smoking raises our blood pressure which is definitely a problem for people that are diabetic but you may not know that smoking also increases your blood sugar which is definitely a problem if you are diabetic. So what are the things you need to do? Follow a good healthy diet, get regular moderate exercise and don't smoke.
