Hello, I'm Dr. Deborah Wheeler, I'm the Vice President of Academic Affairs at Argosy University on the Salt Lake City campus. I'm also a clinical psychologist and today's topic is one that's quite embarrassing to parents, how to stop your child from picking their nose in public. Although we might laugh at this topic, many parents are very embarrassed to find that their children do this. You have to remember that there might actually be something that is bothering the child's nose. You might immediately hand them a tissue, sometimes just simply moving their hand away from their face is enough to get them to stop. They get the message. Otherwise hand them a tissue or if you have to, maybe get them some nasal spray or have them see a doctor if they're really stuffed up. Otherwise you might just simply tell the child if they're old enough to understand, that this is not something we do in public. This is a bodily function therefore it belongs in the bathroom. They are welcome to go in the bathroom and address their needs, but that should not be something that is done in public. Hopefully parents will find ways to address this topic without tremendous embarrassment in public. If you would like more information on this topic or any others that we can help you with on parenting, please contact us at argosy.edu.
