"Hello, I'm Dr. David Thomas. I'm a practicing therapist in Tampa, Florida with Whitford-Thomas Group. Today, I'm going to talk briefly about how to deal with a drug addict. It's kind of an interesting subject, and I guess the overall message would be not to do it. But if, in fact, you're confronted with drug addicts or, certainly, with parents, after talking to their children, tend to get the information there might have been a drug addict in their school or in their neighborhood, there's probably some things you can do to assist. Well, first of all, in dealing with drug addicts, I guess the key is not to engage them. Drug addicts, as a nature of their business, tend to be fairly manipulative, and so certainly, it's kind of like dealing with salespersons. That's not a reflection on the negative part of sales, but you probably want to begin to kind of practice techniques and strategies that allow you to disengage as quickly as possible and be very firm and kind of direct in how you deal with them. For example, if they attempt to kind of keep you engaged with the idea of trying to sell you drugs or get you to use drugs, certainly, you want to use kind of a broken record technique, which is just continue to repeat yourself -- "Thank you, but I'm not interested" -- and quickly leave the area. You know, generally speaking drug addicts -- the idea is to try and inform people around you, be it parents, authorities, teachers, principals, folks like that. So you can...they can help you to deal more effectively with drug addicts. Again, this is Dr. David Thomas, and thank you for watching."
