Recently, you may have heard people discussing family law and getting a family law attorney, or getting a family law lawyer, and your not sure what is meant by family law. Hello, I'm Robert Todd, and I'm here to answer the question, what is the definition of family law. Well, family law encompasses an area of the law that deals not only with divorces of individuals who are married, but also in determining, in such a divorce, whether there is going to be support paid by one spouse to the other. If children are involved, family law encompasses the idea of who is going to have the primary custody, or primary parenting of that child or children, and who is going to have secondary, or shared visitation or parenting with that child, and who is going to pay whom child support, and how much, and for how long. And then there are the ares of equitable distribution. How are the assets of the marriage going to be divided and distributed? How are the liabilities of the marriage going to be divided and distributed? And family law also encompasses paternity.
