My name is Christine Marquette, and I'm a registered and licensed dietitian with Marquette Nutrition and Fitness, and I've been asked how to detox or cleanse your body. Now, these things actually mean different things to different people. Most of the time, when people think of cleansing their body they think of doing a fast, or or something, basically, to completely empty their digestive tract. There are a few times when this is actually needed. For example, if you are going for a medical procedure, maybe you're going to have a colonoscopy done. Then, you absolutely have to empty your colon and your intestines completely, and in that case your doctor will actually give you something to take. Most often it's some type of fluid, where you're put on a very bland diet for a few hours, and then you are put on a clear liquid diet, meaning all you can have is things like Jell-O, juices, sports drinks, water, those types of things; no solid food. And then, you take a particular medicine that basically causes your digestive tract to significantly contract and flush out any residual food that may be, it's already digested; it's basically waste in your in your digestive tract, your lower digestive tract. That would be one way to clean, to cleanse your colon. As far as detoxing, that depends on what type of toxic properties that you have in your body. If you're talking in general about detox most people think of it as just, you know, environmental pollutants, maybe bad food. They've been eating junk food. They're trying to get rid of all the impurities in their body from just an unhealthy diet and just from being exposed to environmental contamination. From that perspective, you really don't need to do anything specific to flush everything out of your system other than start avoiding all of those bad foods. If you start eating a healthy diet your body is actually quite good at eliminating toxins from your body if you feed it properly, you give it the right things that help it to actually function the way it was designed. So, in doing so that would mean including a lot of fresh foods, a lot of fruits, a lot of vegetables. You can include some fruit juices. A lot of times the fruit juices will help stimulate your lower digestive tract to help empty your digestive tract. Make sure you drink plenty of water to aid your liver and your kidneys in filtering out any toxins from your body, but it's not necessary to go on a fast, again, if you're just trying to do a normal detox. If it's somebody who actually has toxic items in their body from drugs or alcohol then in that perspective they new do need medical supervision. They new need to be in a rehabilitation type facility where they can go through a medical detox. But again, for your average person that's just tryin' to rid your body of environmental pollutants or or junk foods, then the main thing is just avoid those particular items and get back into a healthy eating pattern.
