My name is Christine Marquette and I'm a registered and licensed dietitian with Marquette Nutrition and Fitness and I've been asked how to find low cholesterol diet plans. Now the main thing to keep in mind if you have been told by your doctor that you need to follow a low cholesterol diet or you need to follow a diet to lower your cholesterol, is that, that particular plan needs to be low in saturated fat and low in trans fat. Saturated fat and trans fat, those are the two primary culprits when it comes to food items that raise your bad cholesterol. The healthy fats are going to be your unsaturated fats. Those fats actually help increase your healthy cholesterol or your HDL cholesterol. So you want a diet that's going to include plant based fats; if you eat seafood, any type of seafood is also going to be a good source of unsaturated fat. So, those are a couple things to keep in mind. Saturated fat source that you want to avoid, those are going to be animal fats such as bacon, sausage, whole milk, full fat cheeses, that's very high amount of saturated fat. So you definitely want to look at a plan that does not include those. Trans fats or hydrogenated fats, those are man made fats. That would be food that's actually made with things such as shortening. Again you want to look at a diet that doesn't have foods that are made with trans fats. You also want to look for a diet plan that includes a lot of high fiber foods. High fiber foods are associated with lower cholesterol. So that's going to be a lot of fruits and vegetables, whole grain products such as brown rice or a whole grain bread or wheat pasta, beans. Those are all good high fiber choices. That's one of the main things, is plenty of fiber, making sure that you get plenty of unsaturated fats, very little to no trans fats and no amounts of saturated fats. There's a couple of different for looking at menus or meal plans for a low cholesterol diets. You can find some information on the American heart association's website. There's a couple of other websites that you can go to as well for sample menus or sample plans of low cholesterol diet.
