"So what's the work environment for a journalist? This is changing dramatically. When I was a journalist the work environment meant you went to work in the morning, you sat down at a desk in the press room or in the newsroom in front of a computer and you worked on the phone or maybe you jumped in your car and went and interviewed somebody and came back but all the production was centered there at the physical plant at the newspaper and that's increasingly not the case. Increasingly the work environment for a journalist is where the journalist chooses to work. You know a journalist has a laptop and a cell phone and off they go and they write their story on the scene or maybe on the plane back from the scene or at home or wherever and file the story on line. Increasingly too when I was a journalist about a decade ago you had kind of one deadline at the end of the day and working as a newspaper reporter. Increasingly now you have those deadlines all throughout the day. The minute the news happens practically something about it needs to be up on the newspaper's website so the deadline for the print edition is now the last deadline. There are all sorts of deadlines during the day for getting the information up on the web."
