Video Transcript

"So how much do reporters get paid? Well the short answer is not much. A starting salary for a reporter working for a conventional media outlet is just under $30,000 a year. You are going to make a lot more if you go into say nursing or one of the hard sciences like computer science or something like that. You are certainly not going to get rich quickly and odds are you won't get rich ever working as a reporter. There are other rewards perhaps in the career but monetary rewards aren't very high on the list. That said, it is possible to make a lot of money as a reporter particularly outside conventional journalism. Consider a website like Craig's List for example. Here is a site that is essentially a newspaper with only classified ads without all the content that typically goes around the classified ad. That site makes a bunch of money and in many ways does what journalism typically does in the sense that journalism takes information that an audience wants or needs, compiles that information and gives it to the audience and attracts an audience in that way. So part of the answer depends on how you define a reporter and if you are willing to innovate and be creative and come up with a good idea it is possible to make quite a bit of money doing what reporters typically do but if you are talking about mainstream reporting and if money is really important to you you might want to consider something else."
