Summary: When putting fishing line on spinning reels, the best thing to do is to untwist the drag from the top. Find out how to put fishing line through the top guide with help from a commercial fisherman in this free video on fishing equipment.
"You're going to be re-spooling your reel, the best thing to do in a situation like this is to just untwist your drag from the top. Take off your spool and just bring it down to your local bait and tackle shop, they've got a machine there that puts line on and it does a great job and it's very consistent. If you're not in a situation where you can get to the bait shop, it's also fairly easy to put on line by yourself. If you're going to be putting on line by yourself, typically just put the spool on the ground in front of you, put the line just through the top guide, flip your bail up, it's very important. Just tie a simple slipknot. Any knot will really do because if ever get a fish on that can run you down to the end of your line, you ain't going to make it in anyway. If you've got too much of a tag, just trim it off with some scissors. But then what I want to do is just hold the line up just below the first guide and just real slowly keeping tension on the line between your thumb and your first finger. You don't want to reel too fast because there'll be gaps in the line that can cause birds nests and stuff like that, so just reel it nice and slow and the other thing you want to keep in mind is not to over spool your reel, you never want to go too high because it'll spillover and that's when you get a lot of your birds nests problems."
