This is Richard Alan Watson, and I'm an ophthalmologist in St Joseph, Missouri. I trained at the University of Arkansas Medical Science Campus, and I finished my residency in 1990, and today, we're going to discuss meningitis. Herpes Symplex Virus can, which is the same virus that causes cold sores on your lips, or at the side of your nose, and especially in people that are ill or immunocompromised. The Herpes Symplex Virus can spread to the linings of the brain, and those individuals can get quite sick, quite quickly. They'll frequently develop fever, lethargy, confusion, loss of mental status, loss of consciousness. They will sometimes even develop herpetic lesions on their skin, as that virus is disseminated elsewhere, but the treatment for Herpes Symplex Virus Meningitis, is high dose IV antiviral therapy, such as Acyclovir, and in those individuals, it blocks the viruses ability to replicate itself, and allows the immune system an opportunity to recover. This has been Alan Watson, discussing meningitis, and the causes and treatments of it.
