Building a Simple Robot From Scratch

Video Preview

Summary: Building a simple robot from scratch requires finding a few simple components, such as a miniature remote-controlled tank, spare model parts, miniature LED lights and circuits from other toys. Create a one-of-a-kind robotic figure with information from a computer graphics artist in this free video on robots.

"I'm John P. Funk with the Cosmic Funk Studio, and I'm here to show you how to build a simple robot from scratch. I started out with this little mini remote control tank, that I got off of e-bay for about five dollars. As you can see here, it has treads, and it goes forwards and backwards and turns, and the base is the remote controller for it. So it was really simple to make something that can cruise around with all the electronics built into it. So here's the robot I made out of spare model parts using the base from the remote control tank and the controller. You know, you have your forward and backwards function with your turning. And, so, I'll demonstrate to you how I assembled this from the different components. So the top section, which is a shell, is made from spare model parts and sheet styrene, and also little detail parts from, like, tank kits. This little mini robot has LEDs in there that flash, and I got the LEDs from, like, these little gadgets that I got at the dollar store, which have flashing LEDs in them. So I use the same circuit from this little toy, here, to put inside of my robot to give it the illusion that it's, you know, alive and doing something. So I can take the chassis off, which basically just reveals the little tank toy that it fit right on top of. Just a little bit of modification for it to, you know, snap on to it. And here shows you the internal workings of the toy, with, you know, batteries to light the LEDs, and the little circuit that's show there on the top. And you, too, can make a simple robot from buying a little mini RC tank or car, and just some left over toy and model kit parts."
