My name is Christine Marquette, and I'm a registered and licensed dietitian with Marquette Nutrition and Fitness, and I'm going to talk to you about the benefits of multivitamins. There are a lot of benefits to multivitamins depending on your personal need. For example, if you're someone who has a difficult time consuming adequate fruits and vegetables, so you may be deficient in several vitamins and minerals, multivitamins can definitely be an excellent addition to your diet and it definitely be a very useful supplement in ensuring that you are getting the recommended daily allowance of all of your basic vitamins and minerals. In someone who may be potentially battling an illness or infection, multivitamins definitely can be a benefit as well. For the vast majority of people, multivitamins can be a good idea. The main thing is to make sure that you aren't taking mega doses. So for most multivitamins, you want to look at one that has 100 percent or less of the RDI listed down the side, just to ensure that you don't take an excessive amount. It can be quite easy to overdose on different vitamins, and that could cause potential problems such as kidney stones. I mean, this can happen if you're taking a multivitamin and you're using a lot of other fortified foods. Perhaps you're using shakes or bars or cereals that are highly fortified. So just be cautious with the use of multivitamins, but again, they can be a good addition to your diet, especially if you don't consume fruits and vegetables on a daily basis.
