My name is Christine Marquette and I'm a registered and licensed dietitian with Marquette Nutrition and Fitness and I have been asked are meal replacement shakes healthy? They can be healthy. It really depends on how you choose to use them and what type of shake you are actually choosing to purchase. For example for somebody who has diabetes and maybe they have a hard time eating breakfast in the morning then a low carb replacement shake would be a very good option for them. It allows them to make sure that they eat their breakfast which is very important for someone with diabetes and it allows them to go on with the rest of their day hopefully preventing a low blood sugar or high blood sugar reaction. Say in another person who maybe is underweight and they are trying to put on some pounds they can use a meal replacement as in addition to their regular meal to gain some more calories, a lot of vitamins and minerals as well. Somebody who is looking to lose weight, they replace one or two of their meals short term that can help them with weight loss so they can be a healthy thing if they are used as directed.
