My name is Christine Marquette and I'm a registered and licensed dietitian with Marquette Nutrition and Fitness and I have been asked about the dangers of Taurine. Taurine is actually an amino acid that can be found naturally in any type of food with protein whether that is meat, fish, poultry, eggs, dairy products, it is also frequently found in energy drinks in a lot of things such as Red Bull or traditional energy drinks. As far as the dangers of Taurine because it is a naturally occurring amino acid and it is something that is used in the body, there hasn't actually been any significant dangers associated with it. The problem has been more with other herbs or other chemicals in different energy drinks that this particular amino acid has also been combined with. There is that potential that it could cause hyperactivity or GI distress headaches, insomnia, irritability, but specific to Taurine there haven't really been any dangers associated with this particular amino acid in isolation and it has only been combined with other types of herbs, other types of stimulants but by itself as an amino acid Taurine does not have any particular or dangerous side effects.
